 Abstract:
»This chapter explores experiences of violence and harassment at U.S. institutions of higher education as well as intervention and prevention. In the U.S., empirical evidence on these issues has been collected for 70 years. It is discussed here with a focus on four institutional contexts that are conducive to the exploitation of power. This concerns sexualized transgressions in students’ intimate and dating relationships; the exploitation of power within institutional hierarchies and dependencies; the spill over into the workplace of intimate partner violence; and the use of firearms on campus. The focus is on structural conditions that can enable potential perpetrators. On U.S. campuses, the institutional response to violence and harassment is dominated by bureaucratic approaches and prevention programs tailored specifically to students. In terms of legal frameworks, the chapter refers to legal reforms dating back to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Education Amendments of 1972 under the Nixon administration, which impact on sex discrimination in education. Guidelines derivative of Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 concern sex discrimination in employment and impact institutions of higher education in their role as employers.«
